Predicting the unprecedented: forecasting the June 2021 Pacific Northwest heatwave

نویسندگان

چکیده

In June 2021, an unprecedented extreme heatwave impacted the Pacific Northwest of North America, resulting in more than 1000 excess deaths and affecting infrastructure wildlife. Predicting such events is key for preparedness early action, beyond temperature, it important to consider biometeorological forecasts, accounting effects environment on human body. The performance ECMWF's (the European Centre Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) temperature heat stress (Humidex Universal Thermal Climate Index) forecasts during this explored, highlights that several days advance, event surpassing maximum climatology was predicted with extremely high confidence (100% ensemble members) – successfully predicting unprecedented.

The unprecedented 2015/16 Tasman Sea marine heatwave

The Tasman Sea off southeast Australia exhibited its longest and most intense marine heatwave ever recorded in 2015/16. Here we report on several inter-related aspects of this event: observed characteristics, physical drivers, ecological impacts and the role of climate change. This marine heatwave lasted for 251 days reaching a maximum intensity of 2.9 °C above climatology. The anomalous warmin...

Improvement of short-term forecasting in the northwest Pacific through assimilating Argo data into initial fields

The impact of assimilating Argo data into an initial field on the short-term forecasting accuracy of temperature and salinity is quantitatively estimated by using a forecasting system of the western North Pacific, on the base of the Princeton ocean model with a generalized coordinate system (POMgcs). This system uses a sequential multigrid three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) analysis scheme t...
